The World Famous New York Knicks
Anyone who has ever heard of the NBA has probably heard of the New York Knicks. Also known as the Knickerbockers, their official name, the New York team has been playing professional ball since 1946. They were one of the founding teams of the Basketball Association of America and joined the NBA when the two leagues merged in 1949.
The New York Knicks are one of only two teams from the original NBA that has never changed their home city. They have nine division titles, eight conference titles, and two championships to their credit. They have also been to the playoffs 34 times in their history.
When it comes to rivalries, the New York Knicks really know how to pick them. The Knicks-Heat rivalry is one of the most ferocious rivalries in basketball. Started by the frequency of their playoff meetings, the teams started a rivalry and set records in the league when they became the first teams to not only meet in the playoffs in four consecutive years, but also to take those series to the maximum number of games each time. Other notable rivalries include those between the Knicks and the Bulls, the Pacers, and the Nets.
Off the court, the New York Knicks are extremely active in their community. Their partnership with the Madison Square Garden’s Garden of Dreams Foundation allows them to interact with other teams and sports in the area to improve the future for children through educational and fitness programs. They also give awards to outstanding citizens, and host basketball clinics for youth.
Madison Square Garden, also commonly known as just “The Garden” to fans is the home of the New York Knicks. Since the late 1800s, Madison Square Garden has been built, renovated, and rebuilt. The current building is the fourth to be erected. With seats for almost 20,000, and costing $123 million, the arena sits right atop a railroad. The building is scheduled to be renovated once again after the end of the 2010-2011 hockey season. There will be new lighting and wider entrances as well as other upgrades and additions.
Entertainment during Knicks games is exciting and diverse as any fan could wish for. The Knicks City Dancers are amazingly talented and energetic as are the Knicks City Kids and the Acroback Tumblers. Also entertaining and energizing fans are the drum line known as the New York Sticks, the 7th Ave Squad, and various entertainers from the area picked during contests to perform during time outs.
Being a New York Knicks fan is a very satisfying experience. A consistently exciting team, they provide for their community both on and off the court. A visit to The Garden is one that you will not soon forget.
